John started playing guitar when he was 14, right in the heyday of the New Wave explosion. “I wanted to be like the groups on Top of the Pops but didn’t know how – the only local tutor taught classical guitar so that’s what I started on.” By the age of 16 he was playing, singing and writing in his own band. In 1984 he began to study for a degree in music at Liverpool Institute of Higher Education and during this time he played in several bands around Liverpool and St Helens.
After graduating John taught music in secondary schools in Ormskirk and Skelmersdale before becoming music co-ordinator in several primary schools.
John has spent the last 20 years in education, more recently as a primary school headteacher for over 6 years. He has a wealth of musical experience and, more importantly, an ability to motivate and excite children to learn.
John says, “The Rock Project is an exciting way to teach children how to play a musical instrument because the sessions are so much more than a music lesson. Not only do the students learn the skills to play, they also develop the important skills of communication, cooperation and creativity – all in a fun and safe environment. The added bonus is that all the children get the opportunity to play as a real band, something that most ‘bedroom’ musicians can only dream about.’
